The World is Shrinking

Over here at MSU I see at least one new longboarder a day. Yesterday I saw a guy eating alone in the cafeteria with a board so I approached him to tell him about our kick off race coming up this weekend. He ended up coming over to our table to eat with us.

We then moved on to techy nerdy talk, naturally, and I noticed that his board had some Mile High Skates Hybrids on it. I asked him how he heard of MHS and said a buddy down in Florida told him to get it. I asked him who the guy was, since a buddy and myself had a fun skate trip down to Florida Christmas/New Years of 2008/2009. It ended up being a mutual friend named Sheldon down in Orlando. Sheldon games with this guy, and Sheldon gave us a good tour of the Orlando/Clairemont area.  Small world huh?

This brings up an interesting and controversial point. As the world shrinks and the internet brings people together, it challenges the typical, “Don’t talk to strangers” or going even further, “Don’t stay at people’s houses you don’t know” schema. I personally have met up with people based on skating alone in Florida, Kentucky, and Ontario. Each time, people were glad to give up couch or floor space and even go as far as to let us shower and feed us. It’s so great to be a part of such a tight-knit brother/sisterhood. Keep up the good work, skaters.
